So, I have these two postcards that I got in a set of photography cards at my university bookstore. They're not graphic or anything, but I want to send them to people who will enjoy them!

The first one is of a pair of hands clawing at each other. Honestly, this one kind of freaks me out to look at...though it really is a nice photograph. Still, I'd like to get rid of it asap! lol

The second is of the back end of a horse that, I think, has been hooked up to a plow. I can't be sure. Anyway, the photo is of where the horse's torso and hind legs meet - and you can, therefore, see some of his manly bits. Don't I sound like such a prude?? LOL anyway. It's pretty shadowy, so it's not graphic or anything, and it is also a very nice photograph, but I don't want to make the mistake of sending it to someone who will be offended.

Any takers?

Until the mid-1950’s paperback covers tended to be illustrated in a very ‘literal’ style. Then along came a young artist named Mitchell Hooks.

In the mid-’50s Mitch (and a few others) revolutionized the look of paperbacks by montaging brash graphic images together and rendering them in unorthodox mixed media techniques that tipped their hat to abstract expressionism.

Its easy to be blasé about punk rock design in today’s visually overloaded world where everything’s been done… but in the Leave-It-to-Beaver America of 50 years ago this was pretty wild stuff!

There are some remarkable collections of vintage paperback covers on Flickr. One of the best has been compiled by collector/archivist UK Vintage. Recently, he assembled for our viewing pleasure a tidy little set of 1950’s Mitchell Hooks covers ( with a promise of more to come).

If UK Vintage’s Mitchell Hooks set leaves you hungry for more (and I don’t blame you one bit) then drop on over to Kyle Katz’ Mitchell Hooks set and satisfy your craving with even more hot dames, cool dicks and sizzling art, design and type that’s as fresh and inspiring today as it was half a century ago.

I'm interested in the white lines with the little white shapes that somewhat resemble birds (to me) texture.

I just want to know the maker of the texture~
If you know which batch it's from, that's just a bonus. x3

One more example, if you need it~ )

this isn't a real polaroid (i know mari knows this), but from a program. the original photos i took came out too blurry to my liking, but i rather thought they were still nice so i gave them the 'roid treatment and happy with the results.

the usual, with an apple cinnamon muffin and a clementine. and green tea.

Words seem to have left me these days and so I opted to do this.  I just hope I don't get fried for the music and the photos that I used.

CREDITS:
Music - Scandalous by Mis-Teeq
Photos - From all 'ya Toma lovers out there.  Some were taken with permission.  Many were stolen (some are even watermarked) so please don't hate me.  And even if you do, I will have no remorse for doing it 'cause it's Toma, damn it.  Besides, we all love him, don't we?  That ought to be reason enough to forgive me...

I hope.

Happy weekend everyone!

Jen Stark: On the Inside

If you haven’t heard of Jen Stark yet, you’re missing out. Well, not anymore: she has a new website that is stuffed with her amazing brightly-colored creations. I’ve mostly seen her cut-paper sculptures like the one above, but she makes similarly bright drawings in two dimensions as well.

Here’s a beautiful cut-paper animation she made as well:

you know how much i miss you? as much as you probably dont.

harper-cover

One of my most prized books is the beautiful, and massive Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life. It’s a book filled with Harper’s brilliant modernist nature illustrations, and one that I think belongs in every illustrator’s collection. Two factors otherwise prohibit more people from adopting the book into their libraries: the book’s physical size (it’s so big, mine hides away in a drawer because no bookshelf can handle it, and it’s big enough to be its own coffee table) and its hefty $200 pricetag ($135 on Amazon).

cardinal_sm

As a book, it’s a work of art itself, and it’s truly inspiring to flip through and be fully enveloped by its pages, but I’ve always wished there was a more accessible showcase of his career for the more casual (and thrifty) fan. I suppose AMMO Books agrees; they have just released a popular edition of Charpey Harper: An Illustrated Life — the same book, but considerably smaller (and bookshelf friendly) and at an affordable $49.95 ($32.97 on Amazon).

So if you have been pining for this collection, but could never justify the price, now you have no excuse. And, of course, if money is no object, there’s always the limited editions from AMMO for $400 that are signed by Charley Harper and author Todd Oldham, and come with a fancy slipcase and one of Harper’s silkscreen prints. Yowza.

Thanks for all of your suggestions on tv shows, guys!! I haven't even finished reading all of the comments, but I will definitely get through them!! Lots of good suggestions in there! ^-^

But.... BIG NEWS!!!!! I GOT MY NEW VISA TODAY!!!! It was kind of a struggle and I had to go over and over to this government institution or that office over the last two months, and get this form from the city office or that thing from Sensei or wait for this receipt or that proof-of-something. Only to have an immigration officer give me the most dubious look in the world a few days ago and talk to me in a tone of voice that said, "You are crazy, this visa is never going to fly." But it did!!!!!! I got the notice that I was approved today and changed all of my plans immediately and spent the rest of the day picking it up and taking care of other legal things! I'm now all set for the next three years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *throws a party* I really, really am considering digging into my savings to buy an ipod touch (in celebration). Or not. BUT I AM HAPPY!!!! *dances*

So, while I was in the immigration office I went to the convenience store downstairs and saw some cute things.. I was wondering, is anyone interested in random pictures of things like this? Truth be told, convenience stores ('conbini') are huge parts of life in Japan. At least, life in the city. Without them, I think that a lot of people would die for lack of food, bandages, or even shampoo. Funny because I never went to a convenience store in the states unless it was to get gas for my car (they don't have gas at conbinis here) or slurpees or those delicious do-it-yourself nachos (also not here)!

+3 pictures )

(I should be sleeping because I need to get up early tomorrow, but I am totally watching the Star Trek movie because it just came out on DVD in Japan today... couldn't help myself and had to buy it!!!! And who knew my DVD player was region-free! Not me!! =D)

flower-girlTaiwan-born artist Flora Chang studied graphic design in San Francisco before moving to Kansas City to begin work as a greeting card artist for Hallmark. A lot of famous doodlers got their start designing greeting cards (Robert Crumb and Tom Wilson come to mind), and I’ll bet my wooden teeth that Flora Chang is also destined for similar stardom!

From the moment I first discovered her Happy Doodle Land flickr stream, I became immediately enamored with the entire collection of cute and colorful characters, her adorable alphabet animals and her picturesque painted people. Deceptively simple and intricately innocent, it takes a deft hand to create such seemingly childish art. Flora makes it all look so effortless and carefree; which combined with her kaleidoscopic color palette and delightfully charming subjects, makes for a pretty joyful combination. I’d like to live in this Happy Doodle Land one day, but for now it’s quite a nice place to visit.

ATTN

i have some moleskines in my possession. i am obviously not going to need all of them so i am selling them. whichever one you want $16.99 shipped. most places have them for $18+ plus shipping. some have them cheaper but they add up to more than $16.99 when shipped. anywho if you want more than one then it's slightly more for shipping but not more than $2 or $3.

i am pretty much all out, i still have some of these:

then i have the 18 month (july 2009 through december 2010) weekly notebook planner.

and they are like this:

large version hardcover, black
and the size is 8.3 x 5 x 0.6 inches

i've already shipped three out and i'd be happy to sell more, i need to get rid of them. they're 16.99 shipped.

they are ALL 18 month: july 2009 thru december 2010.

if you're interested comment with your email and what kind you want, if i still have that kind i will email you an invoice via paypal and i will ship your moleskine out as soon as you pay me.

thanks!

comments are screened so you can safely share your email.
